Twenty years since The Real Thing

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the release of Faith No More’s breakthrough album The Real Thing. The album was the first to feature the vocals and songwriting of Mike Patton and spawned the hit single Epic. The album peaked at number 11 in the Billboard US album charts and  number 30 in the UK. Once more I’m grateful to the Metal Hammer blog archive for another excellent Behind the Music-style article on the genesis of the album. Sample quote: “It was a great time for us,” recalls [Mike] Bordin. “We never had any of the issues that were to cause such problems later on in our career. We were getting along really well, and I think the music reflects that sense of belonging together. And I am so proud what we did back then, and how we did it. Without taking the easy route.”

Metal Hammer brings the story beind the Real Thing

Another great Behind the Music-style article from the Metal Hammer blog is published today following on from their King for a Day… piece some months back: “The Story Behind Faith No More’s Real Thing”. Sample quote: “Mike came to a gig right out in the middle of nowhere in California. Literally so far out, it was almost in Oregon! He gave us a tape, and we were blown away by his voice. It was unbelievable. He was such a ridiculously good singer. There was no comparison with Chuck.” (Mike “Puffy” Bordin).

Give us your opinion on this seminal album below. It was certainly my introduction to the band and remains a favourite.

King for a Day

The Metal Hammer blog has a great King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime piece. The original article was published in the print magazine in 2005, 10 years after the album release. It is very wide-ranging and focusses on the album’s genesis, the Jim Martin sacking, the band’s musical development, the Metallica and Guns N’Roses tour and the break-up of the band. Sample quote: “Mike HATED Jim, wouldn’t even look at him on stage unless he was about to throw something at him. It was inevitable that he’d go.” (Roddy Bottum). Enjoy the piece.
