Links for a day…(vol. 60)

  • Mike Patton continues to do the media rounds to promote Mondo Cane and he has given a lengthy and revealing interview with the Cast in Metal podcast on MTV. Mike mentions that he is writing a new Fantomas album, that he has received music for a new Tomahawk release from Duane Denison, that a new Lovage is ready and may sometime see the light of day and that he is seeking collaborators for a new Peeping Tom disc which will sound very different form the debut. From a purely Faith No More perspective Mike again pours cold water on the prospect of an imminent new record but does offer some home by saying that it is “not out of the question”. The interview is well worth 27 minutes and 21 seconds of your time.
  • A quirky but interesting examination of Faith No More lyrics as the inner workings of the Joker’s mind from Pop Matters: “In a feat worthy of the Clown Prince of Crime, Faith No More somehow managed to encapsulate the fractured, subversive purpose of Heath Ledger’s Joker 16 years before Ledger’s Joker came into being.”
  • Faith No More’s current incarnation on British TV (All hail King Cameron!) in 1997. Not sure if we have shown this before but here goes in any case:
  • And once especially for David Cameron for the day that is in it:

Great memories of these vids – I was at the London 95 show (Forum,) and the Ashes To Ashes clip is from TFI Friday – notice the stitches on Pattons head, as this was filmed a few days after the London Astoria show when he busted his head open.

  2. p0g0 says:

I’m pretty sure of that wound in Ashes to Ashes video was made in this London gig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQaTNzVkm8U
Thank you for the video, i’ve never seen before and totally blows my mind

  3. admin says:

Cheers for the info. Can’t believe I missed that at the time especially with John Barnes on the show too.

  4. Dr. Bob Bobson says:

I wonder if they’ll bring in a new bassist for Tomahawk, or if Duane will just do the bass too again.

  5. Ramon M. says:

Awesome interview.. classic Patton attutude towards the interviewer…you can tell he is so sick of answering these questions, as he always was…The clips were awesome as well…so cool of him still performing after really gashing his head…what a diehard…shows why he is hailed as the king (for a day..hehe), and still so humble….awesome…

  6. tbeest says:

Thanks, you saved 27 minutes and 21 seconds of my time ;-)

  7. The most worthwhile 27 minutes and 21 seconds of the day!! It’s good to see you again!! :-)
Just a question, is David Cameron a fan of Faith No More?

  8. Prozac says:

Love the Lovage BABY…saw them live in NYC Bowery Ballroom…great show …great CD

  9. Whit says:

    Gimme that Tomahawk!!!

  10. Nina says:

So much better than just reading interviews. But clearly people need to stop asking the same old questions….it does get boring! Love the passion behind Mondo Cane & looking forward to some new Lovage and Peeping Tom.

  11. Jason says:

    That Bowery lovage show ruled!!

  12. Chris says:

I’m guessing Crudo is dead. Truly bummed it’s not on-deck. It’s been supposedly ready to go for over a year now. And it’s the one thing I forgot to ask him in SF.

  13. Jones says:

I was really, really looking forward to Crudo, but I think I can live without it if he’s truly gonna do all the shit he says he’s gonna do.

  14. amy says:

um, does anyone notice the RHCP banner emblazoned on top of the podcast page? ahhh the irony, haha, i expect nothing less from MTV. thanks for your blog, it’s become a part of my daily ritual. saw FNM in 1990 open for Billy Idol (went just for FNM) at the Cow Palace and most recently at the Warfield (i flew in from Spain). yo, any Mr. Bungle fanatics in Madrid with a cassette player? i have an original “Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny” tape i bought 20 years ago and am dying to listen to it!

  15. Ti Mort says:

To be really honest…..I would scrap it all for one more go around the FNM merry go round!!!!

  16. Firsa says:

Sadly, I had to look up David Cameron… wow, I’ve been living under a rock lately. Hopefully a change for the better (which doesn’t seem to be a longshot).

Speaking of long shots, I wonder if that Twitter rumor of FNM playing at the Austin City Limits Festival in Oct. has some substance. ^

  17. Jawshco says:

The Joker reference seems kind if pointless to me, but you could make a darn good video of “I started a Joke” using clips of the Joker from The Dark Knight. Of course, that song already has a decent video.

  18. fernetpunker says:

“King for a day…. Fool for a lifetime” is unreachable. The masterpiece of 20th century popular music.

  19. Firsa says:

@Punker: way to take it to the other extreme, man. I’d have to disagree with you a little bit; but I do think it is their best album. And seeing their performance of the title song at the Warfield on the 4/14 was absolutely ethereal.

  20. alien_visionary says:

Seriously. King For a Day was definitely one of the many Warfield highlights. I also think the podcast is clear cut “evidence” that there in fact WILL be another FNM album.

  21. Ti Mort says:

Alien Visionary…can you expand on your theory…….how so?

  22. Mike Tattoo says:

More Mike Patton over here -

    http://www.yourmusicmagazine.com/blog/mike-patton-talks-mondo-cane-with-your-music-magazine-may-issue-78-out-now.html

He talks about Mondo Cane on vinyl, Metallica, and the Warfield shows.

  23. lastoknow says:

Has anyone spotted the dedication on the Mondo Cane sleave?…translated ‘dedicated to the woman of my life’…I am guessing he is talking about Titi eh? What a beautiful man.

  24. SeanL says:

Mike’s interviews are making me nervous. He seems pretty positive that Faith No More is ending after this.

“There won’t be no next time, my friend.”

Then again, he could just be talking about the way the Warfield shows were structured. If they were sure that there would be no album, they would probably tell the fans.

    But still…..I’m nervous…

  25. Firsa says:

There are also several newer foreign interviews, logically in countries where MC will be touring. In them (from what I can tell) he seems to reveal more about his personal motivations/inspirations, but just the same answers regarding FNM. It’s almost as if he has his standard FNM-related answers written down on a note card that he brings with him to interviews, just in case.

I thought I saw a mention somewhere of a new Selftitled Magazine interview on Twitter; but I haven’t seen it published anywhere…

@lastoknow: my guess is the object of the dedication looks something like the woman drawn on the sleeve (sans the green hair?). So if that’s this “Titi” person then there you go. How romantic :)

  26. Mat says:

Patton would have to realise that any mention of a possible future for FNM in any of these interviews would then take the focus of the article away from Mondo Cane? He would certainly expect to be asked about it EVERY time and any hint of a new album is only going to encourage more questions regarding FNM and less on Mondo Cane.

Call it wishful thinking, but I think most if not all the other members want it to happen, or at least want to try.

  27. alien_visionary says:

They are in no way going to confirm anything through an interview. The don’t want any new album attention or hype. I think they have all stated that they’re really enjoying playing without any pressure for new material….any confirmation of an “album in the works” would turn up the hype and pressure. Enough said.

  28. Ti Mort says:

You know..it’s interesting….I am no clearer on the subject of mending old wounds….what happened back in the day with these guys? It sounds like some pretty ferocious shit!!!! Anybody…..

  29. iekener says:

they’re saying there won’t be another album to get interviewers to stop asking about it. this doesn’t mean there won’t be one, interviewers just need to shut the fuck up about it and let it happen if it happens. either way, mondo cane is a great album. i showed it to maestro siciliani, ex director of Columbus symphony, and he said the pronunciation was no good but the songs were beautiful

  30. iekener says:

i forgot, he also said the arrangements were very unusual, but good (for whatever it’s worth).

  31. SeanL says:

He said the pronunciation was “no good”? That’s odd…Patton lived in Italy for years…I’d think his pronunciation would be pretty good.

  32. Firsa says:

Perhaps Italy is like America where pronuciation vastly differs according to region. I’d like to see one of my pidgeon-speaking Hawaiian neighbors try to carry on a meaningful conversation with someone from Boston. I’d pay for that, actually…

I survived the first couple of listens and now I really like Mondo Cane! Everything blends together better. New favorite is Quello Che Conta (sp?). Good music to sing along to in the car.

  33. Rob says:

The pronunciation is as good as you’ll get from a foreigner… Dean Martin was no better when he sung “Volare” … “… nel blu dipinto di blu”

  34. Mike Bolger says:

Whoa. 1983 Faith No Man? Is this for real?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkRiV6E9gUA

Puffy without dreads or facial hair.

    Billy without a head.

Roddy looks like he just wandered off the set of Dazed and Confused.

You go Girl! You go Downtown!

  35. Natan says:

it’s not Roddy, it’s Wade Worthington:) And you get a glimpse of a VERY young looking Billy in this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AU-_o3B9lJQ

  36. alien_visionary says:

That’s definitely at 19 or 20 yr. old Roddy. Worthington was out of the band by 83′

  37. Natan says:

OK maybe youre right. looked a little closer this time and i does look like Roddy. Great 80′s moves by the way…

  38. Firsa says:

OT but since this is the latest MC tag:

Props to Mike “Tattoo” Bolger on the Coachella thread for what may be a successful solo street marketing campaign for a Mondo Cane show:

    http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27636&page=112

Way to take some initiative :)

  39. Firsa says:

Here’s another Mondo Cane pseudo-review that is awesome in that it provides a side-by-side comparison between the originals and Patton’s renditions so you can single out the changes he made (I’m suprised this one slipped under Patton Archivo’s radar):

    http://mediocremusicblog.com/2010/05/mike-patton-mondo-cane/

You can also listen to both versions at the same time – try it with Urlo Negro!

  40. Firsa says:

Hi again, another MC interview (in English!) for the 2 or 3 people that are checking:

    http://www.thevine.com.au/music/interviews/mike-patton-_-interview20100528.aspx

Alas, no new FNM info, but still the best one I’ve read so far – it’s like he chugged a few Red Bulls before talking to this guy. Enjoy…
